If mental fitness is like a house in which you do life-giving work, then physical health is the foundation of that house. The stronger your foundation, the wider range and larger volume of tasks you will be able to carry out towards meeting your most meaningful life goals without causing our whole house to collapse.
I’ve experienced the effect of a weak foundation firsthand with the onset of chronic illness over the past few years. Physical health colors everything in your life, from daily “adulting” chores to life trajectory. It not only affects life circumstances but also mental health, especially when it involves navigating daily fatigue and pain. And while we can’t always control what diseases and health setbacks come our way, we can always focus on what we can do to improve our day-to-day experience of our bodies. I like to think of it as raising the baseline for our health.
Most of us know have at least an inkling of what healthy behaviors we should be incorporating into our lives and what unhealthy behaviors we need to do less of. But the problem is, we are not acting on what we know most of the time. How many times have you stayed up until 1 or 2 AM watching cat videos on your phone? Or how many times have you opted to eat heavily processed foods for every single meal of the day?
The root of problem lies in our inability to connect our small, daily actions with long term results that we truly value.
We must bridge this gap in order to increase the consistency of our health-promoting actions. That is why in my video below I have outlined 6 key points that have helped me to improve my baseline health. They will help guide you too as you craft a wellness plan that is both effective and do-able. These key points address the mental aspect of a successful health strategy so that you are grounded by your “WHY” in the big picture sense but also in each individual action step that you build into your plan.
Building your own personal health & wellness plan involves a chunk of time to reflect and strategize, as well as dedication to see it through each day, but it’s essential to be able to take the reins of your health and steer it in the way that you want it to go rather than letting it drag you around every which way.
Here’s to better health, increased energy, and a firm foundation.
